Windows Vista Windows Update Error 780
If you receive error 780 when you try to install Windows Vista updates, Windows was unable to start the SQL Server VSS
Writer service.
Open Administrative Tools by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking
System and Maintenance, and then clicking Administrative Tools.
Double-click Services. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or
confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Right-click SQL Server VSS Writer, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, make sure the Startup type is set to Automatic or Manual.
If the SQL Server VSS Writer Service Startup type is already set to Automatic or Manual, follow the steps in the next
procedure.
Review the SQL Server summary log
Open the SQL Server summary log to determine which other services can't be started. The log is located at:
%programfile%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Log\Hotfix
For every service listed in the log file that didn't start, follow the steps under Check the SQL Server VSS Writer
Service startup type, replacing SQL Server VSS Writer with the service listed in the file.
